As of January of 2010, synthetic chemical “Weed and Feed” is on the way out in Alberta.  Why? Water soluble synthetic fertilizers dissolve and frequently run off or leech into the environment. This causes water plants to expand their presence to the point where they use all the oxygen in the water, causing fish and other water organisms to suffocate.One landowner group prone to over fertilization and excessive use of environmentally dangerous chemicals is urban lawn owners. In order to relieve the environment of the impact caused by the chemicals in weed and feed fertilizers, the Alberta government has legislated an end to their use by 2010. How about just getting everything green and forgetting the weeds?  This could be o.k. as long as the neighbours are tolerant of the streams of dandelion seed parachutes drifting over to their lawn. The nest time you are tempted to conduct a barefoot romp over your private backyard biosphere, keep in mind that thistle seeds are wind–borne, as well! You could have a professional apply herbicide to your lawn.  Done carefully, this is arguably better than the present system: there are careful conscientious lawn care professionals who do great work and are thoughtful about chemical residue and chemical run-off. Apply Turffix^®, or ask your lawn care professional to apply it.  Keep in mind the importance of watering a bit extra after a weed herbicide application - it will combat the plant stress.
